So, yeah, I'm building a brewpub in Joseph, Oregon. (Google maps link here.) I worked for Terminal Gravity for a year, it was a pretty crazy place. "Flying by the seat of the their pants," is a gross understatement. I was digging it, there were 2 cool owners (out of 3) and was living in an amazing place.
Then I tore (snapped, disconnected from the bone) my ACL while skiing. Jumping at the opportunity, the lame (alcoholic, creepy, sexual harassing, egomaniacal, 51%) owner, fired me, about a week before my knee surgery, without discussing it with any of the other owners. Needless to say, I don't like the guy very much.
After I was "fired and crippled" I spent a couple of long, dark, and slightly fuzzy (thank goodness for painkillers) winter months stuck on my couch, wondering what I was going to do with my life. Luckily, during some part of that time I decided that the little tourist town, 6 miles closer to the mountains from Enterprise, could really benefit (as could I) from a brewpub. Thus, Mutiny Brewing Company was born. (Think you guys knew about the name when I was at Davis, but after what went down the name got even better.) With financial help I bought a building that had been a bakery/restaurant and (eventually) started renovations.
My system is going to be tiny (4 Bbls) compared to the rest of y'alls brewhouses. It can get pretty dead here in the winter, so I figured it was better to brew more in the summer (and maybe take in a Davis intern once in a while) than let the yeast die during the winter, when I might not be brewing very much.
That's about where I am at right now. Seth is right, I will/do try to keep tabs on everyone via Facebook, but I do have a blog for my place at mutinybrewing.blogspot.com

Speaking of big news, did anyone else see that Eric is ENGAGED! I am so happy for you. And from the looks of it (via some facebook stalking) she is quite cute....nice work! Okay, that is enough with the exclamation points, but I am a girl, I get excited about these things.

New Brewery

Hey Eric and Seth (and anyone else that just reads this)...

Just thought I'd spread the news that I will no longer be working for Trumer in two weeks. I'm going back to my old brewery Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City to brew there. Early next year I'll be transfering into the lab. I don't start until Sept 10. Until then, I'm road tripping it to Anchorage to help a friend move. Hope all is well.

Hey all (Seth and Eric). Just thought I'd make a quick appearance because I'm actually using a computer. Eric, I'm proud you're working full time again at New Glarus. I'll see you in two weeks when I fly out. I flight leaves Oakland at 6:15 am the day after St. Patty's Day. That will be a rough flight. I'm in town for 2 weeks. Plenty of time to go get drunk. Seth, how"s life at Miller? Dave Goodstall, one of the brewers at Sudwerk during our class, just got hired on at Trumer. Tex is proud to have just installed a bottling line at his brewery. He"s stuck at work right now trying to bottle some beer. Hope all is well. I raise my beer up right now in a toast to you. Cheers!

So anyways, someone sent the brewers a bunch of Deschutes t-shirts while I was "away" which means that I didn't get one... which got me to thinking, "maybe some of my friends would like to trade t-shirts." I know you all would rather trade beer, but shirts are easier to mail. If you're interested, let me know.

Here's the deal: I couldn't wear my all-stars at the brewery. I can, however, where them to my classes. Since I couldn't afford new shoes (not true) I had to quit and do something else.

Here's the real deal: I think I got pretty burned out really fast. Four months of recovery time has been nice, and college classes are super easy when you are twice as old as everyone else in class. I miss the brewery a lot, but I'm ok with that.

Q: What the hell are you doing now?

A: I'm not going to med school - It's occupational therapy school... and no, it has nothing to do with career counseling. So I spend a lot of time volunteering at a school and have recently started hanging out at a nursing home. Occupational therapists make sure brewers can put their pants on and drink beer... you should all be so thankful.

It's quite possible that in my time off (winter and summer) I'll be able to do some part time work at the brewery. They have been gracious enough to offer me that opportunity... and I'd be brewing... no bottle-monkey business for me!

We will see how it pans out... who knows. A year from now I might again be brewing gold medal winning beer. We shall see.

Here's a question for Kari: Are you alive? Did Enterprise, OR get blown away in that crazy storm? Are you one of the missing mountain climbers? Have you brewed as much beer yet as Stoneboogie makes in half a day? And what's with this bottling operation?

but I'm going to anyway.

First of all I was wondering if anyone (AB or Miller kids), know anything about GAI bottlers. The 3003 series is in Milwaukee and St. Louise on their pilot plants. I don't know if any of you corporate kids know anything about them.

Secondly....Sheboygan, really, what the fuck? Tell us more.

Thirdly, I should have written months, and months ago to say that I am currently living in Enterprise, OR, working at Terminal Gravity Brewing. (It says so in the new brochure and everything.) It's truly in the middle of nowhere, but it's an amazing place to live. The county is a little over 3,000 sq miles, with a population of 7,000 people. I live in the county seat with a population of a whopping 2,200. It's a pseudo mountain town at 4,000ft elevation, and the snow started falling a couple of weeks ago. My favorite fact is that we are 70 miles away from the nearest stoplight...there aren't even any in the county. It sounds pretty crazy, and it sort of is, but so far it's been a pretty great adventure.

I hope everyone is enjoying their new jobs/situations/career paths.

Brat contest could be on the cutting board

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. --A local bratwurst-eating contest could be on the cutting board. A former city attorney hates it so much that he is asking the city to let residents vote on whether a bratwurst-eating contest as part of the Sheboygan Jaycees' annual Brat Days should continue.

"It's gross," said Clarence Mertz, 84. "This is a situation where you are saying to the young children that it's OK to overeat. In fact, we sponsor a contest to reward the person who overeats the most. Overeating is an epidemic among young children. They should be told overeating is bad for their health."

The contest has been part of the festival since the 1950s, said Tom Wolff, director of marketing with Johnsonville Sausage Co., which is one of the event's sponsors.

"It's entertainment, that's all it is," Wolff said. "This last year had one of the biggest draws we've ever seen. There was probably 2,000 people sitting out there for two hours, and they enjoyed it."

Sheboygan County Clerk Julie Glancey said it was too late to get an advisory referendum on the April ballot and the next scheduled election is the September primary -- after the festival is held in August. The common council is expected to vote Monday whether to hold the referendum.

ESPN and CNN carried segments on the 2005 event that showed 37-year-old Sonya Thomas from Alexandria, Va., setting a record by consuming 35 brats in 10 minutes.

"Anytime Sheboygan is on TV in regards to tourism and in a favorable light, that's good for the community," said Kim Swisher, manager of the city's tourism division.

The event grew last year as competitors from the International Federation of Competitive Eating got involved. The festival wants to bring the group back this year, Wolff said.

Robotic Keggerator!

Apparently someone decided that just having a tap in their house wasn't enough. They wanted a computer to dispense beer for them too. And also tell them how much beer was left in the keg. And also tell them what their blood-alcohol level was.

Take one linux computer, one fridge, one tap, and a few servo controllers and whammo, instant beer robot! Pretty neat setup.

Well, not quite, but shit people, something interesting must be happening in a brewery near you. I took a tour of Fred Miller's Milwaukee, WI facility this weekend. Nice digs. They have a warehouse that stores 500,000 cases of beer... and the inventory gets turned over every 24 hours. Oh, they also mentioned that 40% of the beer they produce in Milwaukee is consumed in Chicago... That's 200,000 cases of some random Miller product a day. Oh, and the pretzels they serve at the end of the tour rock.

How Gasparini Got Me Killed... Almost

So last night I'm having this dream, I don't know, I'm in a parking lot or something somewhere in Colorado. Well, anyways, I apparently didn't have a car there, so I walk outside, which just happens to be the top of a mountain... Oh, and it's really snowy. So who pulls up? That's right, it's Matt, and he is still driving the hyundai. So I hop in, and we get on the road to start our descent of the mountain. Unfortunately for us, the road is extremely icy, and before Matt has even released his foot from the brake, we start sliding down the mountain. His foot, of course, remains on the brake. The car, however, is picking up speed and headed in a straight line... One which doesn't exactly line up with the road. At this point the car hurdles over the edge and Matt does that funny giggle, after which he apologizes. Sooner than I expect, the car impacts the side of the mountain - due to the snow and the angle of the slope the is saved, although it's tumbling down hill. Matt is being tossed about quite a bit, as he's not wearing his seatbelt. Then all of the sudden the car hits a tree and stops, too bad we're buried in snow and upside down... and that's about when I wake up and realize there's quite a bit of time before I need to go to work.

The moral of the Story:
Let's keep this blog alive... Oh and wear your safety belt.

I have not posted in a while but now is my chance. Trumer is getting busier, we just had a couple of employees move on to bigger and better things, and our market is expanding. We are gonna be hiring some new brewers which makes me happy cause I won't be the new guy anymore. I really like my job here...I get to do everything and its good experience.

Congratulations to all who won medals at the GABF! and even more importantly our class rules as far as all the places we work, even Stoneboogie, who better watch out cause I just built my own lightsaber out of random Tri-clover fittings...I'm also training on an x-wing fighter (and by that I mean forklift)

They put me on the front page of the newspaper and online.....now I know I have made it big! I'm consideing retirement since there is nothing left to accomplish in my career!

hey all! here's my last two months-a-log:

-we all get ripped in chico
-we stagger back to davis, say awkward goodbyes and make doubtful promises
-i spend the next week maximizing my time with marcie and spraying both coasts with resumes, both e- and snail- varieties. i get bites, but nothing i can really take as far as cost-of-living versus pathetic-starting-salary ratio. ya'll know the score. so i throw all shit BACK in the p.o.s subaru and drive back to ohio and crawl back onto my brother's basement couch. (it was frighteningly comfortable, as before.)

-six weeks of housepainting and ultra-shitty construction jobs later, i get home from a ten hour day of shovelling pieces of fire-damaged house and check my voicemail. the dude's like, hi, this is michael bowe, owner of Angel City Brewing in Las Angeles, i saw your resume online and you look like a good fit. please give me a call (at 1-800-eet-fukk...just kidding, that's not his number.) so i do, and we talk, and he flies me to LA. we meet and greet, i do a working interview, show him i'm for real, and shake hands. i fly back to O-ho-ho, toss my shit in the p.o.s. (yet again), and hit the I-40 for the southlands. i have to say, it's been pretty good. i'm livin South Bay (home of Redondo Beach, probably the prettiest beach on earth (for the sand, as well as the unreal amount of hotties!) last wkend i went to this tie-in event between our beer and this new irish pub that opened in downtown LA. they had dancing cheerleaders. 'nuff said. LA ain't all bad. 'specially since, apparently, you can hit some kick-ass skiing at Bear Mountain, then be back in Redondo soaking up the rays, all in the span of like six hours. you guys gotta drop by.....if only so i can shoot out yer corneas with rubber bands.

Congrats on reaching your 1248th week!
I am enjoying my 1335th week. In the last two weeks I have put in about 185hrs of work.......I know I have the tendency to exaggerate, but in this case I may have worked more!

On the good side, I ordered my chemicals from Zep and tried them out on my nasty ass fermenters and it almost brought tears to my eyes! The Z-chlor just ate away at 10month old yeast concrete.

That's how exciting my life is.....I'm stoked about cleaning!!

ANYWAY.....talk to you later Eric....I do just address you since we are the only two that seem to be trying to breathe life into this blog. Is anyone else out there?

Wad up all!? This is a pretty sorry state of affairs.......where did all the brewers go?
Well, just so you know Jeff, Darren's video was nice for a day, but I need to drop it back at the library now that my wife is home from vacation! Ha-ha
I called Debbie to see about grades and she said tht they had been sent out last Wed.. Darren and Tex got theirs, however I have not received mine even though they live 30miles from me. I hope to get them soon.......although I don't want to see my engineering grade....or paper 2 for that matter! I guess it's all good no matter what considering most all of us have found employment.
Well I have to get back to work here boys.

Just in case anyone was wondering, I'm pretty sure that Brewbrite and INXS have never before been mentioned in the same sentence. On another note, after reading the lame info that ISP supplies for it's Brewbrite on the web, I've learned that it's basically PVPP, which made me think of Herr Spiker and the BASF visors... anyways, I found it all a bit surprising, as Brewbrite is added to the kettle, and as we all know, PVPP is added pre-filtration... so anyways, neither Brooke Burke, or the members of INXS had anything to say about that.

Yo, Yo, Yo! What's up all!? I'm back in Sacramento for the day and finally have access to the internet!!
We haven't started to brew yet because they jut turned in the ATF paperwork! So, I probably won't get to start brewing until Septmeber. In the meantime I have cleaned the entire brewery and have dumped all the beer. Now I just have to clean the tanks and prep them for use.
Other than that I'll be helping with the set up of the restaurant and possibly the graphic designs.

On to a little more important stuff.........

I like July because of the 4th... my "first" day of "work." That's right - My first day of work was paid vacation. How sweet it is. Oh, I've since been paid and received free beer. So now all there is to do is drink it while watching family guy.

So what the hell is up with the rest of you? Kari is in Thailand (as of Friday). Anybody got some good news? Gasparini, are you brewing yet? Someone please feed my need for posts on the blog.

Oh yeah...you can all stop worrying. I got a job which I start Tuesday; although, it is with my old company, Grainger. At least its money.

Hello all!

I haven't been online much because I've been living in a hotel down by the freeway. But as of today Tex and I live in Berkeley...we are moving our stuff in this weekend....

I'm getting in and paying my dues at Trumer while Tex is doing the same at Black Diamond in Concord. Our powers combined with the south Bay efforts of Tipsy McStagger is surely a force to be reckoned with...

I actually really like Trumer so far, and seems like I'm doing well...Lots to learn but the brewers are really good with my training. Lars is more of a character than I thought...but he treats me well so I can't complain.

Howdy all! I just want t congratulate Eric and Andrew on their new positions in the brewing world. It's always good to know that you have a brewery to visit in almost any part of the country and receive cheap or free beer!!
Shawna, Mason and I are moving this Sunday to Sunnyvale and then I start work on July 11th. The closer I get to starting, the more nervous I get. I keep getting phone calls from the GM and owner because they are filling out the ATF forms for opening the business. They keep calling me to ask about effluent and waste......in my head I'm like "Jesus Christ....the thing I never paid attention to in class", but of course I come out with a perfectly plausible BS answer for them!

Anyone who is in the area of San Jose, PLEASE come by, I'm going to be extremely lonely come September because Shawna will be in Sacramento for 4nights a week. I already know my beer consumption is going to rise (if you can believe that) on these nights.

To those of you who don't know, Andrew got the cellar position at New Belgium. As I am typing this, he's on his way to Fort Collins now. In fact, he'll be arriving later today. He's crashing at my place until he can find a place of his own. I just wanted to welcome him here and make everyone jealous. How much free beer can he get???????
Meanwhile for me, I have no job, no money, and I ain't got shit to do! Being poor really sucks, but I will be taking beer donations. It is going to a worthy cause (supporting my habit). I'm also trying real hard to add an Iowa Unit. Take care

hey, guys. i also survived my cross-country push...2300 miles...slightly longer than the cheesers', but they killed me on time (took me 48). i did see a coupla prairie dogs in wyoming tho. they're really cute, but it took me forever to scrape them outta my tire treads with a nickel.

as weird as davis is, it's a bit weird not being there. weird. hope all goes well for everybody---travelling done safely, jobs gotten, parole officers avoided. seth, hope your migrane has subsided from driving 3000 miles with one eye closed.

That's right, the population of New Glarus, WI remains a scant 2,111. For thems of you who care to know, I had a three day working interview at the Brewery, during which I was able to meet all the employees and do thier jobs (kinda). Anyways, it was a great deal of fun, and pretty cool, but they're interview other people as well... so, since I was the first to go, I've got to wait 3 to 6 weeks for delivery... I mean a decision. Hope everyone else is having good luck in their search for work.

So I made it back to Fort Collins in one piece, just in time to park my car for the nice hail storm to attack it. Summer school sucks! I can't tell you how bad... no Lewis impressions, no Charle stories, and no fucking beer. I mean, how do they expect me to pay attention if they're not talking about beer or letting me drink a nice cold one. They is bullshit. I'm gonna stage my own nonviolent protest. On the plus side, there are actually girlS in my class (did you see that was plural?!) . No offense, Kari, I fully enjoyed your pressence though.
Like many of you, I am still trying to find a job. I interviewed with CB & Potts for what I assumed to be summer help, but in reality it was for a full-time assistant brewer position. I don't know how I would work 40-50 hours a week if I'm taking 18 credits at school?! Oh well, I have a few places I can go talk to, and I might be able to go back to my last job at Grainger.
Andrew graced his pressence in beautiful Fort Collins the other day. He had a job interview with New Belgium. Not sure how it went because I had to catch a flight to Connecticut, which is where I am now. Hope all is well. I better see people at GABF 2005! My drunk ass will be there

Bear guzzles campers' beer, eats food

DUNBAR, W.Va. --Larry Gaynor and his brother had to cut their latest fishing trip short after a black bear ate their food and guzzled their beer. Gaynor, 67, and his brother, Billy Bob Gaynor, 53, were camping at Summit Lake near Richwood on Friday when the bear wandered into their campsite at about 9 p.m.

Hearing a noise, they looked outside their tent and saw the bear with its mouth clamped on their cooler. Larry Gaynor said the bear dragged the cooler 30 yards into the woods and flung it against a tree, scattering a case of Coors Light.

"He only drank three cans," Larry he said. "He would've drank all of them if it would've been Budweiser."

Billy Bob Gaynor said the bear ate all of their food so they returned to Dunbar the next day.

"Either relocate them or let me eat them," he said.

To hell with Budweiser!!
(I got my letter from them late last week. They were kind nough to send it to my parents house so I would have to wait a week before I found out.)
